Namiki 2026 Limited Edition Chinkin Wolf Moon

Wolf Moon (狼月) is the name traditionally given to the first full moon of January. The name is associated with the sound of wolves howling through the stillness of winter. Wolves surviving the harsh season together as a pack have long represented strong bonds and unity, while a young wolf eventually leaving its pack has also come to symbolize independence.

The design captures that contrast through a solitary white wolf standing beneath a brilliant winter moon. The wolf is rendered in silver powder and layers of white, light blue, and bluish-purple lacquer. Its eye is accented with Raden, or mother-of-pearl, creating a sharp point of light against the otherwise quiet, monochromatic landscape.

Wolf Moon is especially significant for its use of Chinkin, one of Japan’s most demanding traditional lacquer techniques. Chinkin is a traditional lacquer technique in which the design is carefully carved directly into the hardened lacquer surface. The carved lines and details are then filled with precious metal powder, creating remarkable depth and intricate detail. Precious metal powder or leaf is then worked into the carved areas to reveal the image. Because each mark is cut into the lacquer itself, the carving requires extraordinary control and leaves virtually no room for 
error.

For Wolf Moon, Chinkin is brought together with several of Namiki’s other celebrated decorative techniques to create depth throughout the winter scene. The wolf, cliff, trees, and delicate plants are expressed through Hira Maki-e, while Togidashi Maki-e is used throughout the starry sky and background to create the atmosphere of a cold winter night. 

Raden adds flashes of light to the composition, most notably in the wolf’s eye and in the background of the trees, while silver powder carries across the pen to connect the moon, landscape, and sky. 

The restrained palette is an important part of the design. Rather than relying on vivid color, Wolf Moon is built around silver, black, white, and cool-toned lacquer. The result is a landscape that feels almost illuminated by moonlight, with the white wolf emerging as the focal point of the scene.

The 2026 Limited Edition Chinkin Wolf Moon is created by the renowned Kokkokai artisan group. Only 300 pieces will be produced worldwide, making this an especially notable addition to Namiki’s Limited Edition collection and a rare presentation of Chinkin artistry.
