Every year, Pelikan releases a limited edition Maki-e pen that is a unique fusion of German engineering and traditional Japanese art. This year's release, the Maki-e Five Lucky Bats, pays homage to a motif traditionally associated with wealth and good fortune. In Japan, the word for bat, komori, can be written in characters meaning "a lot of happiness". In China, the pronunciation of the word “bat” is similar to a word meaning “fortune is coming.”

The bat is thought to bring five kinds of luck: a long life, wealth and respect, health and mindfulness, virtue and grace, and to die without worry or regret. The five bats are drawn on the pen in Taka-Maki-e and decorated using techniques such as raden and kirigane. For added luck, five golden four-leaf clovers have also been painted on the pen. The design is finalized utilizing the Togidashi-Maki-e technique, and features the artist's signature and edition number, also realized in Maki-e.

Limited to just 123 numbered pieces worldwide, the Maki-e Five Lucky Bats sports a 18K, two-tone gold nib and arrives in a traditional Japanese pen box made of paulownia wood.
